4-Methyl-1H-imidazole-5-carbohydrazide is a potent inhibitor of the bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerases, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. 4-Methyl-1H-imidazole-5-carbohydrazide has been shown to inhibit the growth of gram positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. It also inhibits the growth of opportunistic bacteria, such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This compound binds to ATP binding sites on DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV in a manner that prevents ATP from binding, inhibiting DNA synthesis and cell division.
