Coenzyme A S-(3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadecanoate) is a fatty acid with a hydroxyl group. It can be synthesized by the hydroxylation of phytanic acid in the peroxisome and is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other types of fatty acids. Coenzyme A S-(3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadecanoate) has been shown to have antihepatotoxic effects. In vitro method studies have shown that it prevents hepatic steatosis by decreasing lipid accumulation and increasing lipid oxidation. Coenzyme A S-(3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadecanoate) also binds iron and may play a role in iron absorption or transport.
