It inhibits the synthesis of viral DNA, RNA, and proteins, which can lead to cell death by apoptosis. 2'-Deoxyguanosine-5'-monophosphate disodium salt hydrate also inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells and other malignant cells.

This compound is synthesized from 2-deoxyguanosine monophosphate in two steps: first by phosphoramidite coupling with ammonium chloride followed by reaction with sodium hydroxide.
