2-Formyl-3-methylbutanenitrile (2FMBA) is a synthetic molecule that has been shown to have fungicidal activity against Cryptococcus neoformans. It is synthesized by the addition of formaldehyde and methyl butanethiol to nitroethane in the presence of an acid catalyst. 2FMBA has been shown to inhibit the growth of fungi by binding to the chaperone hsp90, which is required for protein folding and maturation. 2FMBA also prevents aggregation of proteins and may be able to simplify complicated biochemical reactions, such as those involving carbamic acid or carbonyl groups.
