Alachlor OA is a pesticide that belongs to the group of triazine compounds. It is used in agricultural and industrial applications as an herbicide or insecticide. Alachlor OA has been shown to be toxic to aquatic life, causing long-term subchronic effects. The toxicity of alachlor is attributed to its metabolic breakdown product, ethanesulfonic acid (ESA). ESA is formed by the reaction with ethane, which can be found in the environment as a result of natural gas production or wastewater treatment. Alachlor OA also has industrial uses as a raw material for the manufacturing of other chemicals such as amides and ethanes.
