5,7-Dichloro-4-hydroxyquinoline is a synthetic intermediate that can be used in the preparation of medicines. It is also an intermediate for other organic compounds and may be used as a precursor to pesticides. 5,7-Dichloro-4-hydroxyquinoline can be produced by decarboxylating 5,7-dichloroquinoline with phosphoric acid or hydrochloric acid. It is possible to produce this compound by reacting 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde with nitroethane in the presence of sodium hydroxide. This compound may also be prepared from quinoline by treating it with phosphorus pentachloride in chloroform and then hydrolyzing the resulting tautomeric mixture with hydrochloric acid.
