Diethyl 3-cyano-6-cyclopropyl-2,5-pyridinedicarboxylate is a proton donor that has been used as a model system to study the activation of chloride by hydrogen chloride. This compound is also used in the treatment of infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and malaria. Diethyl 3-cyano-6-cyclopropyl-2,5-pyridinedicarboxylate has potentiating effects on the activity of carbapenems and other antibiotics against bacteria. It may be effective against multidrug resistant Gram negative bacteria because it inhibits the citric acid cycle and prevents energy metabolism in these organisms. Diethyl 3-cyano-6-cyclopropyl-2,5-pyridinedicarboxylate can increase blood pressure in humans at high doses. The reaction products are not known.
