Description

Amorphadiene is a sesquiterpene lactone. It is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of artemisinin, which is an anti-malarial drug. Amorphadiene is also a substrate for amorpha-4,11-diene synthase, which converts it to amorphadiene oxide. Amorphadiene oxide is converted by another enzyme to produce amorpha-4,11-diene. The production of these compounds was confirmed using model organisms and in vitro assays on the chemical mechanism of the reaction. The surface methodology was used to study the synthesis of this compound on a surface that mimics the biological membrane.
