2-Hydroxy-3-(phosphonooxy)propyl ester hexadecanoic acid is a phosphonate analog and a potent inhibitor of the transcriptional regulator eIF4E. This drug binds to the ribosomal A site and prevents translation initiation. 2-Hydroxy-3-(phosphonooxy)propyl ester hexadecanoic acid also blocks the development of atherosclerotic lesions in mice by preventing their formation. It has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in myeloma cells, which may be due to its ability to block intracellular Ca2+ levels. 2-Hydroxy-3-(phosphonooxy)propyl ester hexadecanoic acid is an agent that can be used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as MS and lupus erythematosus, as well as wild-type experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, where it was shown to suppress inflammation and prevent demyelination
