Lixivaptan is a cation that is structurally related to vasopressin, a hormone that regulates water balance. Lixivaptan is a lixivaptan-arginine complex. It has been found to be an antagonist of the vasopressin receptor, thereby preventing the binding of vasopressin and its subsequent effects in the body. Lixivaptan has been investigated for use in patients with heart failure who have low blood volume and/or pressure due to reduced production of vasopressin or natriuretic peptide. The compound is orally administered, with hydrazine and chloride as active compounds. It has been shown to be effective in laboratory animals at high doses.
