2-Ethoxy-1H-benzo[d]imidazole is a crystalline form of cilexetil, which is an intermediate in the synthesis of candesartan. It is produced by the reaction of piperazine with tetraethyl orthocarbonate. This intermediate can be reacted with hydrochloric acid to yield 2-ethoxy-1H-benzo[d]imidazole. Candesartan, a drug that belongs to the class of angiotensin II receptor antagonists, is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. It has been shown to inhibit the formation of substances that are known to cause inflammation, such as substance P and prostaglandins.
