N,N'-Bis[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-1,8:4,5-naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide is a highly sensitive electron donor that is used in optical sensing. It can be used as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) substrate to detect the presence of nucleic acids. Naphthalene tetracarboxylic diimides are electron donors that have been used to measure photosynthetic activity by in vitro assays. They have also been used as model systems for studying hydrogen bonds and structural analysis. In addition, they are structurally similar to cationic surfactants and can undergo transfer reactions with these substances.
