Harman-3-carboxylic acid is a β-carboline alkaloid, with a molecular weight of 252.3 and a chemical formula of C14H12N2O2. It has been shown to have acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity in vitro. Harman-3-carboxylic acid can be synthesized from 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and L-histidine by reacting them in the presence of sodium nitrite and potassium cyanide. The compound has been found in the leaves of Palicourea sp., which belongs to the family Apocynaceae, genus Palicourea. In addition, this molecule is active on both peripheral and central cholinergic systems. The compound can be detected using nmr spectroscopic data, which shows signals at δ7.5 (1H), δ8.0 (1H), δ8.6 (1H), δ9.
