The nitro group of 3-[(E)-2-nitroethenyl]pyridine (NEP) is used to synthesize a variety of cycloadducts in the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction. The nitro group is not involved in the ring closure of the cycloadducts, but it does affect the stereochemistry of the product. The nitro group can be functionalized by reacting with an electrophile to form a new ring. This new ring can then be used as a starting material for other reactions, such as nucleophilic substitutions and additions.
