Calcium chloride is a salt that is commonly used in the laboratory to prepare cell culture media. The hydrate crystal form of calcium chloride is soluble in water, which makes it an excellent osmotic agent. Calcium chloride has been shown to have a protective effect on cells and prevents degradation of cells. It also has been shown to reverse the permeability of alveolar epithelial cells that are damaged by toxic fumes or smoke. Calcium chloride can be used as a sample preparation agent for microspheres, which are spherical structures that contain drugs or other substances with therapeutic effects. A common use for these microspheres is in biosensors, where they detect changes in pH levels.
