5(Z),8(Z)-Octadecadienoic acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that is synthesized from linoleic acid by the desaturase activity of an enzyme. It has been shown to have a number of beneficial effects on skin, such as preventing UV-induced inflammation and reducing chronic pain. 5(Z),8(Z)-Octadecadienoic acid also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit arachidonic acid metabolism and decrease the production of inflammatory prostaglandins. This fatty acid can be found at high levels in human epidermal lipids and it is believed to play a role in wound healing.
