It was first synthesized from ethyl diazoacetate and ethyl alcohol by the Dieckmann condensation. Tetronic acid can be synthesized by cycloreversion of tetraethylene glycol dinitrate with potassium hydroxide in ethanol. Tetronic acid is commonly used as a reagent for the synthesis of acylketenes. The intramolecular version of this reaction involves the use of aldehyde-containing reactants, whereas the intermolecular version uses ketone-containing reactants.
