6-Methoxydihydrosanguinarine is a biologically active compound that has been shown to cause apoptotic cell death. It is believed to do so by inhibiting the efflux pump, which prevents the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in cells. 6-Methoxydihydrosanguinarine also inhibits mitochondrial cytochrome P450 and may be responsible for significant cytotoxicity in cancer cells. 6-Methoxydihydrosanguinarine has natural antibacterial properties and is a precursor to protopine and other compounds with similar biological properties.
