Ici 118551 is a low potency, non-steroidal, androgen receptor antagonist. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of human prostate cancer cells by binding to the androgen receptor. Ici 118551 also inhibits cardiac hypertrophy in rats, which may be due to its ability to block the effects of angiotensin II. The drug also blocks the effects of 2-adrenergic receptors in the heart muscle and papillary muscles, reducing cytosolic Ca2+ levels. Ici 118551 also has a strong effect on Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signalling pathways in mouse models of sepsis, which may be due to its ability to reduce proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β) and prevent activation of NF-κB.
