Methyl 5-bromo-2-methoxy-3-methylbenzoate is a non-nucleoside inhibitor that binds to the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme and inhibits its activity. Methyl 5-bromo-2-methoxy-3-methylbenzoate has been shown to have antiviral potency in cell culture, but not in rat plasma. This drug can be used as an anti-HIV agent when combined with other drugs that inhibit the viral life cycle. The methyl ester of this drug is metabolized by esterases and has been shown to have low activity against uninfected cells.
