Description:

Ficin is a protein-degrading enzyme that is found in fig tree latex. It is an example of a reactive enzyme that uses UV light absorption to modify the substrate. Ficin has been shown to be highly specific, predictable and preservative-free, with a broad range of applications including the modification of proteins for use as food additives or drug delivery vehicles, or the production of enzymes for therapeutic purposes. As a reactive enzyme, ficin can be modified by chemical inhibitors and can be used in regulatory studies to investigate the effects of denaturing agents on protein structure. Ficin has also been shown to have potential in genetic engineering because it has the ability to cleave DNA strands and modify nucleotides.
