Epoxyeicosatrienoic acid is a naturally occurring metabolite of arachidonic acid. This compound has been shown to activate the apoptosis pathway in fetal bovine and human cardiomyocytes, through protein kinase C activation and phosphorylation of the mitogen-activated protein kinases. Epoxyeicosatrienoic acid also reduces myocardial infarct size in rats by decreasing the amount of cell death due to ischemia-reperfusion injury. Epoxyeicosatrienoic acid may be a potential biomarker for subcutaneous tumors due to its ability to inhibit angiogenesis, as well as a potential drug target for mitochondrial membrane potential.
