Product Information
- 1H-indole-3-carbonitrile, 5-hydroxy-
- 5-Hydroxy-1H-indole-3-carbonitrile
5-Hydroxyindole-3-carbonitrile is a potent inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. This drug has shown potential as a drug for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other cholinergic disorders. 5-Hydroxyindole-3-carbonitrile blocks the action of acetylcholinesterase by binding to the active site on the enzyme, thereby preventing its hydrolysis of acetylcholine. This inhibits neurotransmission in the central nervous system and causes paralysis by blocking motor nerve function. The compound also inhibits butyrylcholinesterase, which has been suggested as an approach for treating Alzheimer's disease because it prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine in the brain. 5-Hydroxyindole-3-carbonitrile is hepatotoxic and may cause death by liver failure following overdose or prolonged exposure. The compound also has antioxidant properties, which may be important for treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer
