Product Information
10-Isobutyryloxy-89-epoxythymyl isobutyrate (IBTE) is a natural product that has been extracted from the acetate extract of a marine sponge. It has been shown to have anti-leishmanial activity. IBTE contains three stereocenters, which can lead to the formation of eight possible stereoisomers. The major form of this molecule in the extracts was determined to be the R configuration. IBTE also has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. IBTE inhibits bacterial growth by binding to polymerase and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) enzymes, thereby preventing RNA synthesis and DNA replication. This agent also binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and prevents protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting production of proteins vital for cell division.
