Decursidate is a phenolic compound that has been isolated from the plant species Peucedanum decursivum. It is an ester of cinnamic acid and methyl alcohol, in which the ester group is in the para position to the carboxyl group. Decursidate can be prepared by hydrolysis of cinnamic acid methyl ester with dilute hydrochloric acid, followed by preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separation. The geometric isomers are separated by HPLC on a chiral column with UV detection at 254 nm and quantified using external standards. Decursidate is also found in Acteoside and Fistulosum, plants belonging to the family Asteraceae. Phenolic compounds have been shown to have a variety of medicinal properties such as antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory effects, and anticancer effects.
