It is a stepwise synthesis of benzyne, an azide and an ethylene. 1-Chloro-2-ethynyl-3-nitrobenzene has been used as the starting material for the synthesis of triazoles. The regioselectivity in the cycloaddition process depends on the functional groups present on both reactants. Functional theory predicts that 1,4 dienes are more reactive than 1,2 dienes because they have a greater number of pi orbitals.
1,2 Dienes are less reactive because they have only one pi orbital available for forming bonds with other atoms.
