3-Bromo-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol is a synthetic protease inhibitor. It has been shown to have low activity against trypsin, maltase, and alanine aminotransferase in rats. 3-Bromo-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol has been shown to inhibit the activity of a number of proteases, including trypsin and pancreatic elastase. This drug is not active against intestinal proteases such as chymotrypsin and pepsin. 3-Bromo-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol also inhibits bile acid synthesis by interfering with the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids by inhibiting cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase (CYP7A1), which is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids in the liver.
