Rotenonone is an insecticide extracted from the acetate extract of Tephrosia purpurea. It has been used as a chemical intermediate for the synthesis of other pesticides, such as piperonyl butoxide. Rotenonone has been shown to inhibit the drug-sensitivity of cancer cells and it is also an analytical method for detecting fatty acids in plants. Rotenonone inhibits cancer cell growth by preventing DNA replication and transcription, which leads to cell death. This effect is due to inhibition of RNA polymerase II activity and protein synthesis. Rotenonone also inhibits the production of fatty acids in plants by inhibiting the activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, leading to decreased levels of malonyl-CoA.
