Triarachidonin is a naturally occurring fatty acid that inhibits the synthesis of triglycerides by blocking the action of serine protease. It has been shown to be effective in animals, and is used as a conditioning agent for cattle and sheep. Triarachidonin is also used as a surfactant in detergents and as an additive to lipsticks. Triarachidonin inhibits the activity of fatty acid lipases, thereby preventing the hydrolysis of triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol. The inhibition of these enzymes prevents the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) from saturated fats, which are required for lipid biosynthesis.
