Benzyl-(1-methyl-1H-pyrrol-2-ylmethyl)-amine is an inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A). It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of MAO-A and has been used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Benzyl-(1-methyl-1H-pyrrol-2-ylmethyl)-amine is a competitive inhibitor and binds to the active site of MAO. The pyrrole ring in this molecule has been shown to be important for binding to MAO, as substituting that ring with other heterocyclic rings can lead to loss of inhibition. The amino group on the benzyl group also contributes to binding by hydrogen bonding with the guanidine nitrogen atom on the active site.
