Product Information
N-Hexadecanoyl-DL-homoserine lactone (NHL) is a long chain compound that is produced by some gram-negative bacteria. It has been shown to induce lysis in Gram-negative bacterial cells, which may be due to its ability to interfere with the bacterial membrane. This molecule has also been shown to be an inducer of genes expression and synthesis of proteins. NHL binds to the synthase gene, which encodes the enzyme that synthesizes this molecule, and causes an increase in the amount of protein synthesized. NHL is a homologue of N-hexadecenoyl L-homoserine lactone, which has been shown to be active against dental plaque bacteria.
NHL is a potent inhibitor of proteases and peptidases, which are enzymes that break down proteins and peptides respectively. As such it can inhibit bacterial cell growth or cause lysis in susceptible Gram-negative bacterial cells. In addition, NHL
