Product Information

Name:
c20-Ceramide
Description:

Ceramide is a lipid molecule that is an important component of the cell membrane. It is produced by sphingosine kinase and then converted to ceramide-1-phosphate by acid phosphatase. Ceramide-1-phosphate is converted to sphingosine 1 phosphate by phosphoethanolamine N-methyltransferase. Sphingosine 1 phosphate can be further metabolized to yield dihydrosphingosine, which can be converted to phytosphingosine and subsequently degraded into fatty acids. Ceramides are also used in the diagnosis of chronic pulmonary diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The level of ceramides may be elevated in people with metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance, obesity, or type 2 diabetes.
