2-(3-Bromophenyl)-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole is a non-nucleoside inhibitor of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) protease. It inhibits HIV-1 replication and has been shown to be effective in preventing AIDS development in monkeys. 2-(3-Bromophenyl)-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole binds to the active site of HIV protease and blocks the cleavage of polyproteins into their individual proteins. This leads to inhibition of viral replication and prevents the assembly of new viruses.
