5,5-Dimethylbarbituric acid is a structural analog of barbituric acid that inhibits the enzyme monoamine oxidase. It has been shown to be an effective antidepressant in animal studies, although it does not show any significant anti-depressant effects in humans. 5,5-Dimethylbarbituric acid may have neurological effects due to its ability to inhibit the metabotropic glutamate receptor and lead to brain infarction. This drug also has a carbonyl group that can react with reactive oxygen species (ROS) to produce reactive intermediates such as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals.
