AZ 12216052 inhibits glutamate release by binding to and blocking the NMDA receptor, which prevents calcium influx into the postsynaptic neuron. It also has been found to have neuroprotective effects in an animal model of Huntington’s disease. The drug binds to NMDA receptors at a site different from that of ketamine, an anaesthetic and analgesic used as a rapid-onset antidepressant and pain reliever.
