(S)-Styrene oxide is a chiral compound that inhibits the enzyme catalysis by epoxide hydrolase. It has been shown to have inhibitory effects on hamster V79 cells, and it is an enantiopure compound. The expression plasmid containing the gene for (S)-styrene oxide was introduced into a wild-type strain of Solanum tuberosum, and the dry weight of this plant increased by 8%. (S)-Styrene oxide is an enantiomer of (R)-styrene oxide and has been shown to be effective in inhibiting the growth of v79 cells when added at a concentration of 25 μM.
