JWH 081 is a synthetic cannabinoid with potent anti-inflammatory properties. It has shown to be useful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and other inflammatory diseases. JWH 081 binds to the cb2 receptor, which is found in high numbers in the immune system and has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α. This drug also inhibits the production of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes. JWH 081 is metabolized by esterases into its active form, 11-hydroxy-JWH-081. The compound is typically administered orally or intravenously. JWH 081 is usually detectable in urine samples for up to 3 days following administration. Analytical methods include LC-MS/MS and HPLC with UV detection at 254 nm or 280 nm.
