It has been shown to be effective against breast cancer and prostate cancer cell lines and is currently being tested in clinical trials for its antitumor activity. Methyl (2R,3S)-N-benzoyl-3-phenylisoserine has been shown to induce apoptosis in a number of tumor cell lines and may function by increasing the intracellular level of reactive oxygen species. This drug also binds to microtubules, which are essential for the mitotic spindle assembly checkpoint that prevents cells from entering mitosis until all chromosomes are properly aligned at the metaphase plate.
