Podofilotoxina é um lignano que ocorre naturalmente e é derivado das raízes da planta mayapple, *Podophyllum peltatum*. É caracterizado por sua complexa estrutura policíclica, que inclui um esqueleto de dibenzilbutirólactona. Este composto exibe atividade biológica significativa, particularmente como agente antitumoral, e tem sido utilizado no tratamento de vários tipos de câncer, incluindo câncer testicular e certos tipos de lesões cutâneas. Podofilotoxina funciona inibindo a enzima topoisomerase II, que é crucial para a replicação do DNA e a divisão celular, levando à morte celular em células cancerosas que se dividem rapidamente. Além disso, possui propriedades antivirais, particularmente contra o vírus do papiloma humano (VPH), tornando-o útil em tratamentos tópicos para verrugas.
