Triethylamine hydrochloride inhibits the polymerase chain reaction, which is an important analytical technique for the detection of DNA sequences. It also has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria. This may be due to its ability to form metal chelates with Fe3+, Cu2+, and Mn2+. Triethylamine hydrochloride has also been shown to inhibit the growth of Shigella flexneri and Mycobacterium tuberculosis by regulating transcription elongation through interaction with the RNA polymerase.
