CAS:Acesulfame potassium is an artificial sweetener that is 200 times sweeter than sugar. It is often used in soft drinks, desserts, and tabletop sweeteners. Acesulfame potassium has been shown to have a high thermal expansion coefficient and will crystallize at high temperatures. This compound can be found in wastewater treatment plants where it is used as a coagulant aid. Acesulfame potassium also inhibits the growth of some bacteria in the mouth, such as Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus.
Acesulfame potassium has no known adverse effects on human serum or kidney beans when consumed at low doses. The metabolic fate of this sweetener has been studied using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with a post-column electrochemical detector (ECD). The GC-MS analysis revealed that the primary metabolite of acesulfame potassium was the methyl ester of acetic acid.
