It has been shown to be an analog of glutamine, which may have chemotherapeutic effects by blocking tumor cells from proliferating. Methyl 2-(bromomethyl)-4-nitrobenzoate is catalytically reduced to yield methylene dinitrobenzene, which reacts with ammonia and formaldehyde in the presence of a reductive coupling catalyst to give polyglutamate. The amide group can be converted into an ester or an amine by acidolysis or reductive amination.
