The mechanism of action for this drug is not fully understood; however, it may inhibit viral protein synthesis by acting at the level of the polymerase chain reaction. This drug also has a number of side effects on the mother and infant, including metabolic disorders in both, increased body mass index in infants, and increased maternal mortality rates for women with HIV infection.
