4-Nitrophenyl chloroformate (4NPC) is a cyclic peptide that reacts with a hydroxyl group to form an ester. It has been used as an activated ester for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, such as diazepam. 4NPC hydrolyzes to release phenol and succinic acid in acidic environments. The reaction mechanism is thought to be similar to that of other activated esters. 4NPC has been used in wastewater treatment and as an antimicrobial agent by forming covalent bonds with proteins, which can then be degraded by proteases. It has also been shown to have a protective effect on collagen and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements have shown that it inhibits the growth of bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli.END>
