Potassium oleate is a pyrimidine compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacterial, yeast, and mammalian cells. It inhibits the production of inhibitor molecules such as potassium and fatty acid. Potassium oleate is also used in chemical engineering as an additive to glycol ethers. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm for potassium oleate shows a type IV curve with a maximum adsorption capacity at a monolayer coverage. This indicates that potassium oleate can be used as an additive to control the vapor pressure of water-based systems. Inorganic acids such as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid can react with potassium oleate, changing its molecular weight and structure. Titration calorimetry experiments have shown that potassium oleate reacts with ethylene diamine at elevated temperatures to form polyethylene glycols.
