3-[(2-Methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]benzonitrile is a drug that inhibits the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). It binds to the lysine residues in EGFR and prevents its activation by the epidermal growth factor (EGF), which leads to inhibition of cell proliferation. 3-[(2-Methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]benzonitrile has been shown to be effective against infectious diseases caused by bacteria, such as ventricular dysfunction in diabetic patients, but not against infections caused by viruses. This drug also has an effect on iron binding and is used to treat iron overload in pediatric patients with hereditary hemochromatosis.
