STDH binds to the MCL-1 protein, preventing it from forming an oligomer with other proteins. This prevents the MCL-1 protein from translocating into the mitochondria and disrupting the mitochondrial membrane potential, which leads to cell death. STDH has been shown to be effective against wild-type strains of bacteria as well as against bacterial strains that have developed resistance to antibiotics such as molybdenum and tungsten.
