:Dodecylpyridinium chloride
Description:
Dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC) is a quaternary ammonium compound characterized by its long hydrophobic dodecyl chain and a positively charged pyridinium ring. It is typically presented as a white to off-white solid or powder and is soluble in water, forming a clear solution. DPC exhibits surfactant properties, making it effective in reducing surface tension and acting as a cationic surfactant. Its amphiphilic nature allows it to interact with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances, which is beneficial in various applications, including as a disinfectant, emulsifier, and in formulations for personal care products. Dodecylpyridinium chloride is also known for its antimicrobial properties, making it useful in preserving formulations and in microbiological studies. However, it is important to handle DPC with care, as it can be toxic to aquatic life and may cause irritation to skin and eyes. Proper safety measures should be observed when working with this compound in laboratory or industrial settings.

CAS:
1-Dodecylpyridinium Chloride is a quaternary ammonium salt that is used as an antimicrobial agent in a variety of products, such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and household products. It has been shown to be toxic to humans at doses above 0.5 mg/kg. At sublethal doses, 1-dodecylpyridinium chloride inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the cationic sites on their cell surfaces and preventing them from attaching to other cells or molecules in their environment. 1-Dodecylpyridinium chloride also binds to the enzyme p-nitrophenyl phosphate reductase, which is required for bacterial growth. This inhibition leads to cell death by preventing ATP production and protein synthesis.
Formula:C17H30N•ClPurity:Min. 95%Molecular weight:283.88 g/mol
