7-Dehydrocholesteryl acetate

Description:
7-Dehydrocholesteryl acetate is a chemical compound that belongs to the class of sterols and is a derivative of cholesterol. It is characterized by the presence of a double bond at the 7-position of the steroid nucleus, which distinguishes it from cholesterol. The acetate group indicates that it has an acetyl functional group attached, which can influence its solubility and reactivity. This compound is typically a white to off-white solid and is soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform and ethanol, but has limited solubility in water. 7-Dehydrocholesteryl acetate is often used in biochemical research, particularly in studies related to cholesterol metabolism and the synthesis of steroid hormones. Its structural characteristics allow it to participate in various biochemical pathways, making it a valuable compound in both pharmaceutical and nutritional contexts. Additionally, it may have implications in the study of certain diseases, including those related to lipid metabolism.

    CAS:

7-Dehydrocholesterol acetate is a vitamin D analog that is used in the treatment of hypervitaminosis D. It has been shown to be effective for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, hypocalcemia, and hyperparathyroidism. 7-Dehydrocholesterol acetate is also used as a feed additive in livestock production to prevent the vitamin D deficiency that can occur with high dietary concentrations of hydrogen bond donors such as carbonyl groups. The mechanism of action is not yet known, but it has been hypothesized that this drug acts by activation of vitamin D receptors on cell surfaces. This drug has also been shown to have anticancer activity and may be useful for treating various types of cancer.
