colistin

Description:
Colistin, also known as polymyxin E, is a polypeptide antibiotic that is primarily used to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. It is derived from the bacterium Bacillus polymyxa and exhibits a unique mechanism of action by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane, leading to cell death. Colistin is particularly effective against pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii. Its structure consists of a cyclic peptide with a fatty acid tail, which enhances its ability to interact with lipid membranes. Colistin is administered either intravenously or via inhalation, as it is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. While it is a valuable therapeutic option, its use has been limited due to potential nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity. Additionally, the emergence of colistin-resistant strains poses a significant challenge in clinical settings. As a result, careful monitoring and stewardship are essential when using colistin in treatment regimens.
